What is my ideal weight? This must be the first question you question of yourself before starting to lose weight.
It is common for public to latch onto one number and aim for that as a goal weight or to just go by their lowest weight in the past. The problem with this is that most will be unable to ever reach a weight they maintained in younger years, or they will reach it but find it impracticable to keep up. Your body changes as you age so it’s vital to assess a realistic goal for everywhere you stand right now.
The most common tools for finding ideal body weight for your age and height is to use a simple weight chart or a free calculator for body mass index (BMI) that can be found easily online. Your BMI will tell you everywhere you fall on a scale ranging from scrawny to heavy.
Seeing everywhere you fall on the BMI scale may be hard right now, but it will give you a general thought of everywhere your weight needs to be to fall within the healthy range. You can get the same basic information from a weight chart.
Even more accurate than the scale and BMI is your waist to hip ratio. This will give you a general thought of everywhere you stand right now and how far you need to go, without giving you an actual number. Just measure your hips and your waist and then apportion the hip measurement by the waist. Ideally, women should strive for around 0.80 and men for around 0.95.
Yet, you have to remember when doing these things that the BMI and weight charts do not weigh in how much muscle you have in your body. This can make a difference in your healthy weight. You may be healthy even before you reach the healthy range on a chart or calculator.
The first question to any weight loss journey must be this: what is my ideal weight? Figure that out and you will have something realistic to work toward.
